Big Fish Entertainment is an independent production company dedicated to creating visually-driven documentary, format, and reality programming for broadcast on U.S. Cable networks, new media, and beyond. Expect the unexpected. From TLC’s DC Cupcakes to the upcoming Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan, Big Fish Entertainment captures and relates extraordinary worlds, characters, and stories that entertain and inform. Since the company’s launch, Big Fish has developed and produced a solid slate of series, pilots, and specials for top television networks including: Discovery, TLC, A&E, National Geographic, Planet Green, Travel Channel, Smithsonian Network, and G4.
WHY BIG FISH?
For us, the name Big Fish is aspirational and ironic. We started small but have never lacked in our boldness. Even when we were a company of two, we also thought and dreamt big. Big characters. Big stories. Big ratings. Big Fish. And it certainly had a better ring to it then Depriest Productions…at least as far as Dan was concerned.
Co-Owner and Executive Producer
During his 27 years in television Doug DePriest has seen life from both sides of the fence, having been a network executive and an independent producer. For eight years he was VP of production and development at Travel Channel. Working for the Discovery network he launched thousands of hours of programming including the famed World Poker Tour. WPT launched a minor cultural revolution which quite possibly warped the values of an entire generation.
But that’s not all! As a cable exec DePriest also launched the Weather Channel’s first live coverage of major hurricanes (Hugo and Andrew). Finally in a fit of repentance, DePriest became the VP of programming, production and development for the Gospel Music Channel (now in 20 million homes). Today, DePriest is co-owner of Big Fish Entertainment.
Co-Owner and Executive Producer
Dan Cesareo founded Big Fish Entertainment in 2006 with business partner Doug DePriest. With the new production shingle, Cesareo and DePriest focus on visually driven non-fiction programming that captures extraordinary worlds and characters using a strong narrative charge. The mantra: “Expect the unexpected.”
Since the launch, Cesareo has followed the chase for the land speed record on the sweltering Bonneville Salt Flats, baked cupcakes for the troops at the Pentagon, and roared down Route 1 with the Hells Angels. Today, he oversees Big Fish’s robust development and production slate of series, specials, and pilots for top television networks including DC Cupcakes for TLC, Ultimate Travel for Travel Channel, and Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan for G4.
Prior to Big Fish Entertainment, Cesareo worked for National Geographic Television and Film where he developed and produced a variety of programs and films including the Lockdown series, Explorer Violent Earth, and Maya Murder Mystery.
Before joining National Geographic, Cesareo served as a freelance producer for clients such as Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, and Voom HD networks. An avid surfer, you can find Cesareo scouring the planet for the perfect wave when he’s not at home with his wife and two children in Bethesda, Maryland.
Combined, the duo bring over 40 years of experience in documentary production, development and project management to the company. Prior to Big Fish the partners have produced programming for Discovery Channel, Discovery Health, National Geographic Channel, WNET, Travel Channel, Voom HD, Discovery HD Theatre and The Good Life Network. Their awards and nominations include both national and regional Emmy’s, Cable Aces, Tellys and the ubiquitous New York Film Festival Awards.
